A note
from the HCS President |
Dear Carversvillians,
Last month, Rhonda Heffern completed the first oral history for the
Historic Carversville Society. She interviewed Ned Harrington, one of
the villages most unique and treasured residents. One of the society’s
primary goals is to continue
this effort with the ultimate purpose of completing a library of oral
histories, which, taken together, will portray a mosaic of life in
Carversville over the years. We are fortunate that in this community we
have residents who were born and grew up in Carversville and who have
stories and remembrances of what village life was like in years gone by.
We will continue to interview each of them and to record
their thoughts and memories. This is a far different effort than the
house histories that we have done for many years
It is these stories and remembrances that give life and meaning to the
historic homes in our village. As the years pass and we become further
removed from these roots, we will still have the structures but not the
stories of the families that lived in them, unless we collect those
stories now.
If you have the opportunity to talk to some of these people, like Bob
Kling, Byron Quimby, Clarence Overpeck or Walter Livezey, you will learn
about another Carversville, one where chickens were raised in what now
is the “secret
garden,” where dances were held in Bob’s antique store and where
children used to cool off in the creek without penalty. The HCS is very
excited to have at last embarked upon this oral history project. We hope
to make these recordings available for you to see at the General
Membership Meeting in November so that everyone can have the unique
opportunity to experience history by oral
tradition.
Sincerely,
Betsy Muzina, President
